Individual therapy
Have you ever come across the meme circulating on social media that humorously states, "In therapy to deal with those in my life who won’t go to therapy"? We resonate deeply with this sentiment because it states the profound truth that the most significant improvements in life stem from focusing on our own personal growth.
While it's natural to desire changes in others, we recognize the limitations of this approach. Instead, our focus is on empowering you to take proactive steps towards self-improvement.
Our process includes understanding your own and others' actions and emotions, fostering a non-judgmental space for expression, acquiring new coping mechanisms and boundary-setting skills, and aligning with your own needs and values in relationships and life.
However, it's important to note that while we encourage self-reflection and personal development, we also acknowledge the complexities of navigating others’ actions and behaviors. We help with this daily as well. Witnessing our clients embrace change and embark on transformative journeys fills us with immense joy, as we witness growth and the remarkable changes you achieve.
Couples therapy
Navigating relationships can be very challenging, wouldn't you agree? Did you know that on average, couples spend six years grappling with conflict or persistent unhappiness before seeking assistance? Six years is far too long, especially considering the value of your time.
At Calgary Therapy Services we specialize in helping couples like yourselves, address many concerns that often arise in relationships. Some of the most common issues we encounter include navigating intimacy, coping with betrayal or affairs, overcoming communication barriers, resolving conflicts, balancing parenting styles, discussing finances, and establishing boundaries with extended family. Additionally, we've observed emerging themes such as adjusting to new routines and life post-pandemic, as well as balancing work and personal life.
What sets our couples therapy apart is our therapists' formal training and certification in attachment modalities and the Gottman Method. This expertise equips us not only to mediate conflicts but also to provide a roadmap for understanding your challenges and fostering lasting improvements.
We acknowledge that couples therapy can be emotionally taxing, and we strive to set realistic expectations for the process. In the initial stages, we often recommend more frequent sessions (approximately every two weeks) to delve into your relationship history and individual backgrounds while swiftly addressing immediate concerns. As your therapist begins to understand each partner, your relationship, and the concerns you have, sessions can be more spread out.
Regardless of where you currently stand in your relationship, we believe that seeking support together is a commendable step towards fostering mutual understanding and addressing both the strengths and challenges within your partnership.
Parent counselling and support therapy
Parenting can be one of the most difficult, yet best things we can experience. Our parenting support and counselling sessions are tailored to address the specific challenges you're facing while equipping you with the strategies and tools needed for effective and timely change.
When parents and caregivers encounter difficulties related to their children, we encourage you to engage with one of our professionals initially before even setting up a session for your child.
During these adult discussions, we explore potential adjustments that can be made at home(s), school, etc. Once these options have been explored and implemented, we discuss involving your child in the therapy process. Prior to any sessions with your child, all legal guardians must provide informed consent, allowing us to formulate a comprehensive plan which includes a communication plan, treatment trajectory, and shared objectives.
We offer a variety of therapy formats to accommodate families' diverse needs, including individual parent sessions, joint sessions for parents (whether together or apart, providing there's an amicable dynamic), support for blended families, and assistance for step-parents.
Families seek our parent counselling and support services for a multitude of reasons, such as addressing behavioral challenges, managing emotional outbursts, navigating co-parenting dynamics post-separation, delivering difficult news to children, handling issues related to divorce or separation, establishing and maintaining boundaries within the household, balancing different parenting styles, and addressing high-risk adolescent behaviors, among others.
If you aren’t sure if this is the right step for you feel free to book our 15-minute phone consultation to get started and we are happy to walk you through all of our options.
Child and Adolescent counselling
Parents often reach out to us in while in deep worry of desperation to help their child. We understand this, and luckily, we have some of the most experienced and specialized therapists in the area of Child and Adolescent work. (Ledja, Heather, Holly, and Natasha to be specific).
Our process for child and adolescent work typically begins with a 15-minute consultation with a caregiver or parent and/or a Parent Counselling & Support Session. We want the adults in the child’s life to have a chance to share their viewpoint, and to understand the process, risks and benefits of their child being involved in counselling. A family session may also be recommended in the very beginning to help everyone feel on the same page, and to develop a treatment plan tailored to the specific circumstances.
Children and adolescents can gain valuable coping skills, emotional regulation techniques, and a deeper understanding of themselves and their experiences. Additionally, we provide a safe and nonjudgmental space for them to express their thoughts and feelings, helping to alleviate stress and anxiety.
Our work with your child or adolescent involves various techniques such as talk therapy, art therapy, play therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, etc., depending on the child's age and issues.
Our therapists work collaboratively with your child to address concerns, set goals, and track progress over time. By engaging in the plan and trusting the process, children and adolescents can build resilience, improve relationships, and develop the skills needed to thrive both now and in the future.
Prenatal and postpartum therapy
You’ve read the blogs and listened to the podcasts on having a baby, and now you are experiencing anxiety, uncertainty, and at times feel like you can’t do this. We understand, and know this is a very exciting, yet vulnerable time for you.
Our prenatal and postpartum sessions offer a dedicated space where you can attend individually or with your partner to address any concerns or challenges related to welcoming a new addition to your family. Whether you're apprehensive about the impending changes in your life, anxious about the birthing process, or struggling with overwhelming mood swings and sleep deprivation, we're here to provide guidance and unwavering support.
During these sessions, we may explore various topics such as surviving with such little sleep, self-care (yes, that still is a thing during this time) managing developmental milestones, mother’s guilt, identifying your support network, and assisting you in sorting through the many decisions, emotions and thoughts that accompany this significant life transition.
Our goal is to accompany you on this journey, offering reassurance and practical strategies to navigate the complexities of parenthood with confidence and resilience.
Couples therapy
These specific sessions are where couples can address current or potential issues, enhance communication skills, and establish realistic expectations for their future together. It offers a safe space to explore individual values, beliefs and goals, ensuring alignment and compatibility between partners. Some of the common issues discussed in pre-marital therapy include: communication styles, conflict resolution strategies, financial discussions, roles and responsibilities within the relationship, intimacy and sexuality, and expectations regarding children and family dynamics.
By addressing these topics proactively, couples can lay the groundwork for a fulfilling and enduring partnership, equipped with the tools and understanding necessary to navigate challenges and foster mutual hope, growth, and happiness in marriage.
Family therapy
Our family therapy sessions are about creating understanding, resolving conflict, and improving empathy in familie.. It involves sessions where some or all family members participate, aiming to address issues collectively rather than focusing solely on individual concerns. This approach recognizes that problems within a family are often interconnected and that understanding these dynamics contribute to effective resolution.
Family therapy can be beneficial because it provides a safe space for family members to express themselves, promotes empathy and understanding among everyone, and teaches healthy communication and problem-solving skills.
By addressing underlying issues and improving relational dynamics, family therapy helps families build stronger bonds, enhance resilience, and navigate challenges more effectively; ultimately fostering a healthier and more harmonious family environment.
Please note that a complimentary 15-minute consultation is required prior to your family therapy session.
